WHAT IS SPREAD BETTING?

Invented in 1978 by Stuart Wheeler (IG Index); spread betting was originally designed to offer investors the opportunity to speculate on the price of gold. Hence the company name, IG Index, (Investor’s Gold Index).

Spread betting has now developed into a whole separate new financial marketplace with upwards of 20 companies in the UK providing such services. The main advantage of spread betting is that because it is classed as a bet and not a market trade, this form of speculation is tax-free from both a capital gains and stamp duty perspective.

One of the main advantages of spread betting is that there is a vast array of different bets to make. Everything from commodities to sports is offered and in some cases on a 24-hour basis, when the underlying market is closed. This is important in that if a stock market is closed (i.e. FTSE 100) and you want to take a position, you will only be able to do this through a 24-hour spread betting firm.
